You may have noticed that we like to play "big boards". We usually have 5 or 6 players, and we don't like to be cramped on a small board. This is our version of the basic game board. It does not involve Seafarers of Catan. We generally use this board if we have some newby players and use the Settlers of Catan rules. We also use it as a change when playing Cities & Knights.

There is nothing magic or special about this board. The desert hexes in the middle really serve no purpose other than to complete the large, hex shaped board. We always use a few gold field hexes to spice up the game. The terrain hexes, port hexes and production number tokens are distributed randomly (other than the desert hexes) each game. Note that we usually put 5 and/or 9 numbers on the gold field hexes, and try to ensure that each resource type is fairly represented with 6 and 8 numbers. So, it's not quite random.
